The Speed of Time

Time is often relative. At the very least, the perception of time is dependent on many factors other than the objectivity of time itself. When one is in pain, time tends to go by slower. When they are having a good time, they might find that time is flying by. Our perception of time has a direct influence on our experiences of the cities around us. How do cities go through time? Is it second after second, or is it a more relative matter? This might depend on factors such as how old the city is, how busy it is, and/or how static its development has been.

Writing Prompt 1

Write a poem about the speed of your time living in your city. Looking back at however long you’ve spent living there, has it gone by in a flash, or has it been a dreadfully long experience? Perhaps it is a mix of the two.

Writing Prompt 2

Choose an activity that you often do that either feels like it slows down time or speeds up time. Describe it.

Writing Prompt 3

Write about the mornings or evenings in your city. Does time slow down or pick up pace? What makes it so?
