Urban isolation is a common experience to those living in cities across the world. Even though we are closer in physical proximity to one another, many express the feeling of being more alone. This loneliness stems from a sense of disconnection from the society in which we reside. While surrounded by others, we become ever more aware of our own loneliness. Whereas at a time in the past we might have known all those who lived on our street, it is not uncommon now to be a stranger to our neighbour next door.
Writing Prompt 1
Imagine loneliness as a living entity in a character’s life and write a few paragraphs describing it. Does it reside within your character’s body like a parasite? Or perhaps it is kept in a coat pocket? What does it look like? How quickly is it growing/dying? When did it come to live with your character? How does your character interact with it?
Writing Prompt 2
Go outside at night and look for somebody who is alone. They could be having dinner, commuting, or walking in a park. Imagine the day they just had and write about it. How much time did they spend alone? Are they lonely? Are they going home to an empty apartment, or do they live with others?
Writing Prompt 3
Spend some time walking through a busy neighbourhood. Write down a list of things you see that are meant to promote solitary experiences (partitioned benches, solo dining booths, etc.)
