Past & Future City

All cities, even the newly built, have histories. Some have survived wars, bore witness to major historical events, or been burnt down and rebuilt. Lisbon, for instance, was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1755, which prompted a large-scale reconstruction and redesigning of the city. The changes made by its urban planners, which is largely the Lisbon we know today, are examples of how a city’s appearance can reflect their histories. The history of a city exists as a segment on a spectrum of time. If a city is destroyed and rebuilt, is it still the same city?
