Bodily Movement

Health, or the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, has become increasingly important to those living in urban environments. For many people, work is mostly sedentary, so the need for physical exercise needs to be met during off hours. Some choose to sign up for gyms, while others prefer outdoor activities such as hiking. Many cities have even incorporated physical exercise needs into urban planning goals, developing cycling lanes, parks and hiking trails. When it comes to exercise, cities offer the most diverse and abundant options. However, for those living in these cities, exercising has become more of an activity or task rather than something that is incorporated into all aspects of life. The result is that our relationships with our bodies have changed as well.

Writing Prompt 1

Write about the sensation of exercising without mentioning the exercise itself. Describe only what the body experiences. What does the air feel like? How does the ground feel beneath the feet, if the feet are indeed on the ground? Is the body standing up or is it upside down? What sounds can be heard?

Writing Prompt 2

Write about a character that suddenly cannot move anymore. How do they live with their sudden immobility in this city?
